OUTLOOK
Losing seasons haven’t been the Diablos’ standard method of operation in Drake’s 14 seasons as coach. Mission Viejo has averaged 16 victories a season during his tenure. Look for the Diablos to be closer to that figure this season. Six returning starters and a good group of newcomers had a solid summer, leading Drake to believe the Diablos could challenge for the league championship this year. He also likes the team’s speed and pitching depth. Carr should be a key factor in the Diablos’ success this season. Drake thinks Carr, only a junior, is one of Orange County’s top catching prospects. A standout on the football and basketball teams who has a strong throwing arm, Carr also hit .323 as a sophomore last season. McDonough hit .304 last season. Sorensen (4-2) and Parsons (3-5) saw considerable action on the mound. Drake is a transfer. The others were key members of the junior varsity last season. One other player to watch is Erick Fielding, a junior outfielder who was a standout defensive back on the football team.
