The season ended for the Harbor College women’s basketball team Thursday night with a 70-63 loss to College of the Sequoias in a quarterfinal-round game of the state tournament.

The Seahawks played much better than they did in a 26-point loss to Sequoias in December on the same court, but could not extend their season because of a slow start.

“They’re a much-improved team,” Sequoias Coach Tom Gilcrest said. “That team has come a long way. Earlier in the season they were out of control. Now they have control and they have tremendous quickness.”

Harbor (27-7), which was making its first trip to state, made only four field goals in the first nine minutes of the game. Three of those were by guard Bridgete Williams, a freshman from Morningside High who finished with 22 points.

“The girls played hard and it was a respectable game,” Harbor Coach Louie Nelson said. “We’ll be back next year.”

Harbor was also unsuccessful in containing Sequoias’ center Tanisha Huddleston. The 5-foot-11 freshman scored 15 of her game-high 30 points in the first half and was a rebounding force at both ends.

“She killed us,” Nelson said. “She killed us inside and on the boards.”

Sequoias (31-6), ranked fifth in the state, held a 10-point lead with six minutes left in the first half, but Harbor came within 36-29 at halftime.

The Seahawks never led, but came within two points on three different occasions. With 5:18 left to play, Harbor trailed, 54-53.

The Seahawks’ Kim Young, who scored only two points in the first half, played a strong second half and finished with 23, slightly below her average of 24.7.

“She’s a great player,” Gilcrest said. “She’s got some moves. That’s as good as we’re going to see at this level.”

Nelson said that despite the loss, it was a successful season.

“It was our first time at the state tournament and we played scared,” he said. “And they just outplayed us. We didn’t execute at times and they’re a good team.”

Sequoias will play two-time defending state champion Golden West in a semifinal game tonight at 8.

Lassen 90, El Camino 72--Although the Warriors entered the game with the state’s second-best defense, it wasn’t enough to contain the Cougars.

Lassen (33-1), the state’s top-ranked team, took an 18-0 lead and was never challenged. The Cougars will get a chance to avenge their only loss when they meet second-ranked College of the Siskiyous in a semifinal game tonight at 6. El Camino finished 18-14.

Lilian Cabaleiro scored the Warriors’ first basket on a short jump shot with 14:58 left in the first half.

The Cougars led by as much as 20 points midway through the first half, but El Camino rallied to within nine after an Evonne Renfroe scored on a layup with 53 seconds left before halftime. Lassen then outscored the Warriors, 6-2, to take a 49-36 halftime lead.

El Camino twice rallied to within nine early in second half, but Lassen pulled away to a 78-58 lead with 5:25 remaining.
