With four returning all-league players and seven starters back, Weber is optimistic about Bishop Amat’s chances in 1992. “If our pitching holds up, we could win 20 games,” Weber said. “I think we have a lot of offensive potential.” Bishop Amat’s top hitter is Breceda, who hit .349 as a freshman shortstop and earned first-team all-league honors. Another first-team selection is Suarez, who hit .253 and stole 24 bases as a junior. Also back is Davis, who hit .286 with two home runs and 23 runs batted in last year and was a second-team all-league pick. Chavez, who missed the second half of last season with an injury, is expected to be the Lancers’ top pitcher. As a freshman, she was 10-8 with a 1.13 earned-run average and 59 strikeouts. Defensively, Weber expects Bishop Amat to be more consistent. “Last season, we tried several different lineups with people at different positions,” he said. “ This year, we should have a set and experienced defense.” Shortstop Castaneda anchors that defense.
