SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : Exhibition Baseball Is Back

Baseball returns with four exhibition telecasts this weekend, along with USC, UCLA and Lakers basketball and the usual winter sports television fare.

* Baseball: Cable’s WWOR will air the Dodgers vs. the New York Mets at 10 a.m. today. At noon, WGN will air the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers make their broadcast television debut Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against the Houston Astros on KTTV Channel 11. San Diego-area fans can see the Angels and San Diego Padres Sunday at noon on KUSI Channel 51.

* College Basketball: No. 8 USC visits Washington State at 12:45 p.m. Sunday on Channels 7, 10 and 42 and No. 9 UCLA faces Washington later at 3 p.m. on Channels 2 and 63. In today’s telecasts involving teams ranked by the Associated Press, No. 22 Seton Hall takes on St. John’s (11 a.m., Channels 2 and 8), No. 4 Arizona meets Stanford at 3 p.m. on Channels 2 and 63; No. 15 DePaul takes on Notre Dame at 5 p.m. on WGN and No. 10 Kentucky plays host to Tennessee in a 10 p.m. delayed-telecast on SportsChannel. Sunday’s other telecasts match No. 24 Syracuse and Villanova (9 a.m., Channels 2 and 8); No. 1 Duke and No. 16 North Carolina (10:30 a.m., Channels 7, 10 and 42) and No. 2 Indiana and No. 18 Michigan (11 a.m., Channels 2 and 8).

* Pro Basketball: Magic Johnson will serve as a commentator for the Detroit Pistons-Lakers game Sunday at 12:30 p.m on Channels 4, 36 and 39. The Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers meet in the first game of the doubleheader at 10 a.m. on the same stations.

* Other Sports: In pro hockey, the Kings, winners of six straight, face the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:30 tonight on Prime Ticket. In horse racing, today’s Santa Anita Handicap airs as part of “Wide World of Sports,” (4:30 p.m., Channels 7, 3 and 42; 3:30 p.m., 10).

The Doral Ryder Open golf tournament airs at 1 p.m. today and Sunday on Channels 2 and 8, and the Senior Tour’s GTE West Classic tees off at 2:30 p.m. today and Sunday on ESPN. In tennis, it’s the Newsweek Champions Cup at 11 a.m. today and Sunday on TNT, and the Virginia Slims of Florida at 11 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. today, and 11 a.m. Sunday on Prime Ticket.
