El Modena’s strength lies with its killer Bs: Beckman and Bolle. Both were first-team all-league players and must produce again if the Vanguards are to challenge Foothill. “Foothill is not unbeatable,” Koopman said. “But everything has to fall right. You have to play error-free plus get a couple of breaks. We’re not quite the caliber team that Foothill is, but if (Foothill) gets knocked off here or there, things can change.” Beckman, the team’s No. 1 starter, posted an earned-run average of 1.00 and a 7-12 record last season. Beckman also led the team in RBIs last season while hitting .350, and shortstop Bolle hit more than .300. The other half of the Vanguards’ double-play combination is second baseman Moreno, who started at goalie for the girls’ soccer team that reached the Southern Section quarterfinals. Although Foyle is only a freshman, she gives the team depth, and Koopman said she will push Bolle and Moreno for playing time.
