HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER ROUNDUP : Torrance Wins, Ties the Record for Defense

Jessica Reifer scored on a free kick with three minutes to play to lift Torrance High to a 3-2 victory over Arcadia in a battle of unbeaten teams in the Southern Section 3-A Division girls’ championship Saturday at Gahr High.

Torrance (31-0), which set a section record with 17 consecutive shutouts this season, had given up only two goals entering the match and tied a Southern Section record for fewest goals yielded during a season. La Serna of Whittier gave up four in 1989.

Michele Kennedy scored two goals within five minutes to give Arcadia (26-1) a 2-1 lead with 13 minutes to play before Jennifer Yokoyama tied the score less than a minute later.

Garfield 2, Belmont 1--Garfield (11-1-2) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to win its fifth title in 21 seasons in the City Section boys’ championship at Birmingham High.

Miguel Cortez tied the score midway through the second half and Jose Vazquez scored on a penalty kick for the winning goal.

Chatsworth 2, Granada Hills 0--Sherrie McKnight and Becky Andrews each scored during the first half and goalkeeper Kim Kuhn got her seventh shutout in the City girls’ final at Birmingham High.

Chatsworth (9-0-4) has won all four girls’ City title matches.
