OUTLOOK

Despite the loss of all-league center fielder Kelly Ward (now at Utah State) and second-team, all-league shortstop Shannan Brown (Cal State Hayward), the Lancers figure to engage Fullerton and La Habra in three-way battle for league title. Boothroyd has seven key players from 1991 team that reached Southern Section 4-A quarterfinals, where it lost in 16 innings to eventual champion Irvine. Pitching and defense again will be Sunny Hills’ strengths with the return of Fancuberta and Northrup on the mound. Thurber and Porter anchor the infield, which provided strong defensive support to Fancuberta last season. The loss of Ward at leadoff will be a major headache for Boothroyd, who is concerned about lack of team speed. Sunny Hills also lacks a power hitter, but the Lancers hope to have enough singles hitters to provide adequate run production. The Lancers have a tough early-season schedule, including berths in the Garden Grove Tournament (March 18-21) and the Woodbridge Easter Tournament (April 11-15).
