Five players on last year’s Cavalier team graduated, including all-league third baseman Becky Elcock, who batted .385 and had a .926 fielding average. She’s now playing left field at Orange Coast College. So Carlson, who enters her third year with the team, will field a junior-dominated squad. “We’ve got a good team going for this year and next year,” Carlson said. Remmel replaces Elcock at third and Robledo returns at shortstop with the added responsibility of trying to anchor the infield, particularly the left side. She batted .293 last season and had a .936 fielding percentage. “She’s the best shortstop in the league,” Carlson said. Cisneros (2.98 earned-run average) will do most of the pitching and Matemate, who broke a leg sliding at home in a junior varsity game last season, will catch. Carlson said the Cavaliers should be able to support Cisneros with their hitting. “We intend to score a lot more runs (than last year),” Carlson said.
