The Patriots fielded their first team in three seasons last year and return a number of experienced players. “Last year was basically a time of restructuring the program and breaking in new players,” said Drabek, who returns for his second season. “We should do better this year, because our experience should have a big impact on our confidence and the quality of play.” Fargo, Heritage Christian’s MVP last year and a first team all-league selection, returns to share pitching and shortstop duties with Chaney. “Those two are our most experienced players,” Drabek said. “Darby has a fast pitch that’s extremely tough to hit.” Heritage Christian was a good hitting team last year, but had its problem defensively. Drabek expects the added experience to solve many of the problems. “We’re looking for improvement on the little breakdowns that seemed to hurt us one or two innings just about every game,” he said. “It’s a matter of confidence.”
