Northridge’s Hagar Named WIVA Player of Week

Axel Hagar has been selected Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. player of the week after leading Cal State Northridge to a three-game upset of top-ranked Cal State Long Beach.

Hagar, a 6-foot-7 junior from Hamburg, Germany, had a career-high 24 kills as well as six digs, four blocks and a service ace against the defending national champion 49ers.

Northridge (11-6) moved up to third in the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. poll, which was released Tuesday. Long Beach (16-1) hung on to the top position. Stanford (13-2) is ranked second. The Matadors remained fourth in this week’s Volleyball Monthly poll, behind top-ranked Long Beach, No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Pepperdine (16-2).

Paula Page of Antelope Valley College has been named to the J. C. Athletic Bureau women’s all-state basketball team.

Page, a 6-1 sophomore forward, helped the Marauders (23-8) advance to the second round of the Southern California regional. She averaged 21.4 points and 12.4 rebounds during the regular season.

Guards Katina Mines of Valley and Cori Herman of Ventura were selected to the All-Southern California team. Mines, a sophomore, averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds. Herman, a freshman, had averages of 18.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Simi Valley forward Danny Alexander and Thousand Oaks guard Andrew Borg have been named co-players of the year in the Marmonte League.

Borg, a 6-0 senior, averaged 17.2 points in leading the Lancers to their second consecutive league title; Alexander, a 6-5 senior, averaged 19.4 points.
