WHALES AHOY: Sightings of whales are up 20% off Orange County, says Stanley Cummings of the county’s Marine Institute in Dana Point. This year, 71% of whale-watching boats leaving Dana Point Harbor have reported seeing the mammals as they migrate to Mexico. “After several years of declining sightings, this is the first evidence we have that things are changing,” says Cummings, who was interviewed about the endangered mammals for this weekend’s CBS Sunday Morning television program.
