OUTLOOK

Even in a tough league such as the South Coast, El Toro has a strong championship look this spring with depth, speed, hitting, strong defense and solid pitching. Daugherty has nine players, including seven starters, back from last year’s squad that finished second to Irvine and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, 1-0, by Savanna. Daugherty, who last guided the Chargers to a Southern Section 3-A championship in 1990, also has quality in his returners, led by Jaime Smith (.296), a first-team all-league and second-team all-section pick at shortstop last season. Juggert also won first-team all-league honors and led the county in triples (six). Bulkeley (.341), Davis (.253) and Lauby earned second-team all-league honors. Lauby (16-7) struck out 104 and had an earned-run average of 0.72 as a freshman. Lauby will be backed by another sophomore pitcher, Jodi Smith, up from the junior varsity. Smithson (.293) and Jensen (.308) lend additional experience at second base and center field. Lack of scoring consistency is Daugherty’s main concern.
