OUTLOOK

Capistrano Valley enters the season as the league’s mystery team. With five returning starters, including team MVP Hugelshofer (1.43 earned-run average), the Cougars could be the surprise team with solid pitching, several strong baserunners and good defense. Shortstop Jody Morris is a solid No. 2 hitter with a .304 average and nine stolen bases last year. Jones, a left fielder, was a .279 leadoff hitter with nine stolen bases. Morris’ sister, Danette, adds more speed from her center-field position and on the bases. However, Willms will have to do without catcher Nikki Thomas and first baseman Angie White, who both elected not to play this year. Jacobs and Still, up from the junior varsity, will have to fill in for them. Capistrano Valley also lost the services of second baseman Nivedita Khamamker and pitcher Jennifer Smith, who graduated. Willms is counting on Anderson, a strong-armed freshman, to play third base and back up Hugelshofer as a pitcher. While the Cougars have enough pitching, baserunning and defensive prowess to be competitive, they still need experience playing together as a team in the tough South Coast League.
