OUTLOOK

After suffering through a 4-20 season last spring, Castle is hoping his last year at San Clemente will be a more enjoyable one before he moves on to La Quinta, where he will take over as varsity football coach in the fall. He lost two key performers to graduation: Nicole Naylon (Villanova) and Jennifer Spadanuta (Saddleback College). But the coach of the Tritons starts this season with an experienced group of players to go with a crop of talented newcomers. Two of the returners--Dunmeyer and Tolmasoff--will be among the league’s top players. Dunmeyer, a shortstop, hit .386, stole 14 bases and had 20 runs batted in last season. Tolmasoff, a junior, is a solid hitter (.260) and a top pitching prospect. She had a 2.45 earned-run average with 49 strikeouts and 18 walks in 80 innings last year. Castaneda and Lopez also return with starting experience. Castle might start three to five freshmen, but he is excited about their talent and enthusiasm. San Clemente could play the role of spoiler this season.
