Coach John Duberville called a couple early timeouts hoping to settle his Carlsbad team down and slow Mission Hills Alemany’s momentum.

But after watching Alemany dismantle his team for two quarters, Duberville realized it was no use.

A hundred timeouts were not going to revive his team or change the outcome as Alemany won going away, 68-42, Thursday night in the semifinals of the Southern California Division II Girls’ Regional playoffs.

Alemany (28-4) led 36-26 at half, but went on a 10-2 run to open the third quarter and begin the rout. Carlsbad never got closer than 15 after that.

The top-seeded Lancers (24-3) were beaten in every way, but especially on the boards. They were outrebounded, 38-23, by an Alemany team that wasn’t any bigger than Carlsbad, but definitely much quicker. Alemany converted 10 offensive rebounds into baskets.

Vanessa Nygaard led Carlsbad in rebounding with 11 and scoring with 19, but she only grabbed four rebounds in the second half.

“I was a little tired,” Nygaard said. “I had a couple fouls early and didn’t want to go at the boards too hard.”

Nygaard didn’t get much help from Carlsbad junior center Holly Gerdes, who had only five rebounds.

Alemany’s Zevette Mitchell and Sarah Guziel almost outrebounded Carlsbad by themselves. Mitchell grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 12 points, and Guziel had eight rebounds and 12 points.

“We’re a very fast team and I think we got their big people tired,” Alemany Coach Melissa Melton said. “(Nygaard) is a player, but I think she was out of gas in the second half.”

Carlsbad’s guards didn’t have much left in the tank either after chasing Alemany guards Rachel Corelli and Samantha Rigley around in the first half.

Corelli broke down Carlsbad’s zone defense with dribble penetration and either drove to the basket for layups or kicked it outside to Rigley for three-pointers.

The game was tied at 10 when Rigley hit her first three-pointer. Corelli followed with a lay-in and Guziel hit a baseline jumper to give Alemany a 17-10 lead after a quarter.

Rigley, a 5-foot-9 freshman, hit two more three-pointers in the Indians’ 14-0 run during the second quarter that began with Carlsbad trailing, 21-18.

“Samantha was very poised for a freshman,” Melton said. “She’s been there for us in the playoffs. You’d never know she’s a freshman.”

Rigley finished with 15 points and Kelly McKay added 12 for Alemany, giving the Indians five players in double figures.

Renee Demirdjian was the only Lancer in double figures with 13 points.
