USDHS 3, Helix 2--USDHS (3-0) scored three runs in the third inning to win a battle of unbeatens in their pool. David Cesena and Chris Richard walked, and Aaron Blair walked an out later. Jeff Moore singled home Cesena, and Richard scored on an error. David Thompson singled home the final run. Ian Hamilton (1-0) scattered seven hits, struck out eight and walked one. Helix is 2-1.

Rancho Bernardo 6, San Marcos 2--Pete Keleher tripled and hit a two-run homer to lift Rancho Bernardo (1-2) to its first victory. Relief pitcher Guy Walter was impressive, striking out six in three scoreless innings. Denny McAdams hit a solo homer for San Marcos (0-3).

Crawford Colt Tournament

La Jolla 2, Clairemont 1 (8 innings)--The final two batters of the game got the only hits for La Jolla (2-1), which survived a dominant performance by Clairemont pitchers Devin Henderson and Ryan Calafata. Neither walked a batter, and both struck out three in four innings of work.

In the bottom of the eighth, Andy Anello was hit by a Calafata pitch, but forced at second on Seth Hidalgo’s fielder’s choice. Ames Crawford broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field, advancing Hidalgo to third. David Mullin’s grounder hit the third base bag to score the winning run.

Mullin (2-1) pitched two innings, allowed two hits and struck out two to earn the victory. Jason Green started for La Jolla and struck out six in six innings, walked one and allowed four hits.

Clairemont (0-3) committed two fielding errors and a throwing error in the fourth inning to give La Jolla its first run.

The game was played in under two hours.

Morse 8, University City 4 (8 innings)--Lateef Vaughn hit a one-out RBI single in the eighth inning, and Juan Acosta followed with a three-run double to lift Morse (3-0). Winning pitcher Duane Bostic (2-0) struck out eight and walked one in five innings, and also homered. Morse’s Alfie Enano added two hits and two RBIs. University City is 1-2.

West Hills 11, Crawford 4--West Hills (2-1) had only two more hits than Crawford, 13, but had seven runs to show for it. Brian Gaske had two hits and two RBIs for Crawford (1-2), and Larry Haley had three hits, including an RBI triple.

SOFTBALL

Cougar Classic

Escondido 3, Granite Hills 1--Marquessa Penrod (4-0) struck out nine batters and had two RBIs to help Escondido win the championship of the 24-team tournament at Kit Carson Park. Penrod had a run-scoring single in the first inning and an RBI fielder’s choice in the third.

The Cougars had advanced to the title game with a 1-0 victory over Grossmont in a rematch of last season’s Division 2-A championship game. Jennifer Chambers (3-0) pitched the shutout, and Kim Scales drove in the game’s only run with a single in the third inning.
