The Saints have a number of returning players and a solid defense, but Santa Ana lacks its own field. “Our biggest weakness is that we do not have a softball field on campus,” Mitchell said. “They’re building one that will be ready next year, but we have to take a bus to practice everyday now.” Despite that handicap, Santa Ana should improve on last year’s record. Trotter hit .327 and was a first-team all-league selection last year and has good speed. Mitchell considers Lumley the team’s best all-around hitter. The defense is anchored by Ramirez in center field. “She will catch any ball,” Mitchell said. “She’s got excellent speed.” Santa Ana’s infield is considered a strength of the team. Mitchell calls Alnira Romero an “outstanding” third baseman, and freshman Aneida Romero should have an impact at second. Pitching depth is a weakness for the Saints, who are again a young team. Last year, Santa Ana had only one senior and this year’s team has only one. Mitchell picks Huntington Beach as the top contender for the league title, with Marina and Ocean View challenging. “All the teams in this league are strong,” he said.
