Two days after trading John Smiley, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their campaign against high-salaried pitchers by cutting Bill Landrum, their saves leader the last three seasons.

Landrum led the Pirates with 56 saves from 1989-91, but experienced arm problems the past two years and was due to make $1.7 million, a salary that ownership felt was exceptionally high. The Pirates put him on waivers, and he is expected to clear Monday.

“I couldn’t trade him,” General Manager Ted Simmons said. “I had numerous conversations trying to create interest in him, but we didn’t create any interest.”

Simmons said the Pirates won’t trade Barry Bonds or Doug Drabek.

San Francisco Giant left-hander Trevor Wilson underwent surgery to remove a benign cyst on a rib and should be back on the mound within a few weeks, the team said.
