It Was North’s Season

With regrets to the Metro, City and Grossmont conferences, The Times presents its 1991-92 high school boys and girls All-County teams.

Six players from each of the 10-member teams played for North County conference schools, including five boys and three girls from the Palomar League.

This, however, should not be a revelation by any means to anyone familiar with San Diego County basketball.

The North County, particularly the Palomar League, has dominated this sport in recent years, but perhaps never more so than this season.

Five Palomar boys teams finished in The Times’ final Top 10 ranking and two of the others were Avocado League members. For the girls, North County teams held the top four spots all season.

But you say rankings don’t mean much?

OK. North County teams also won the boys and girls championships in Division I and II. They couldn’t do any better than that since all 16 North County schools fall into one of those two divisions.

Torrey Pines, clearly the best team in the county this season, was the only school with more than one representative on the boys team. The Falcons placed both Scot Pollard and Craig Brown. Pollard and Chula Vista’s Jerome Green, both juniors, are the only underclassmen. Lincoln’s Berry Randle and Fallbrook’s Chris Miller both made the team last year.

The girls All-County team had two players each from Division I champion Poway--Allison Brady and Jamie Shadian--and Division II champion Carlsbad--Holly Gerdes and Vanessa Nygaard. Brady, Nygaard and El Cajon Valley’s Heather Holm are returning All-County players. There are six seniors on this year’s team along with juniors Nygaard, Gerdes and Shadian and sophomore Shondel Robinson of Lincoln.

Ballots for the two teams were submitted by roughly 75% of area coaches, and final selections were made by The Times staff writers who cover high school sports.
