PREP ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Dominance Continues

Share

Led by middle blocker Jeff Vanderwal’s 13 kills, Huntington Beach handed the Fountain Valley boys’ volleyball team its first Sunset League loss, sweeping the match, 15-9, 15-6, 15-9.

Fountain Valley has not beaten Huntington Beach since 1986.

Vanderwal, a senior, connected on 13 of 15 spike attempts and led the Oilers with three block assists.

“We weren’t ready to play,” Fountain Valley Coach Tom Gregory said. “We didn’t pass the ball, so we couldn’t run our offense. We were just sort of flat.”

The Barons, 4-1, 1-1 in league, came within two points twice in the first game, but were held to nine points, and Vanderwal hit off the block to end it. They fared worse in the second game, allowing Huntington Beach (8-1, 4-0) to take an 11-3 lead before getting three more points.

Fountain Valley seemed to regroup in the third game, staying close until the Oilers were ahead by one, 10-9. But Huntington Beach held Fountain Valley the rest of the way, finishing off the match when middle blocker Claud Doumerc hit off Rocky Gubernick.
