HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hueneme’s Adame Throws No-Hitter and Loses

Hueneme High’s Frank Adame pitched a no-hitter and struck out a season-high 11 batters Friday but still lost his third game in four decisions, falling, 2-1, to San Marcos in a Channel League baseball game at Hueneme.

Hueneme (4-5-1, 0-2-1 in league play) trailed, 2-0, entering the bottom of the seventh, but scored on an error. With two out and runners at second and third, pinch-hitter Joey Vargas struck out to end the game.

San Marcos (2-1 in league play) got a run in the first inning on a walk, stolen base, wild pitch and a fielder’s choice. The Royals scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth on an error.

In other baseball games:

Kennedy 6, El Camino Real 4--Kennedy stormed back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Trailing, 4-3, in the fourth, Kennedy (7-2, 3-1) scored twice on a double by Jeff Tagliaferri and a sacrifice fly by Billy Ramirez (two hits).

Mike Smith hit a grand slam in the first for El Camino Real (6-3, 2-2).

Taft 5, San Fernando 0--John Erganian was two for three and drove in three runs for Taft (6-2-1, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Scoody Woods had two hits for San Fernando (4-5, 0-4).

Crespi 7, Cantwell 4--Jim Horacek, Joe Ruggiero, Victor Seper and Kyle Carden each had two hits to lead the Celts’ 12-hit attack in a nonleague game.

Keith Evans (3-0) allowed six hits and two earned runs in five innings for the Celts (7-2).

Royal 8, Newbury Park 4--Shane Slayton belted a three-run home run in the first as Royal (6-3, 3-1) won a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Royal had only two hits, but Newbury Park pitchers walked eight and hit two batters.

Jeff Hook homered and had two hits for Newbury Park (6-4, 3-1).

Saugus 9, Canyon 7--Scott Minkler had three hits and Justin Miller added two hits and scored twice for host Saugus in a Golden League game.

Bobby Cowan (3-0) pitched six innings, striking out eight for Saugus (5-3, 2-0).

Chad Engbrecht had three of Canyon’s eight hits.

Quartz Hill 6, Ridgecrest Burroughs 1--Javier Salinas and Ryan Wilson combined on a one-hitter for the visiting Rebels in a Golden League game. Salinas (4-0) struck out seven and walked four in the first six innings. Wilson retired the side in order in the seventh, striking out two.

Hart 9, Alhambra 8--Soren Halladay had four hits and four runs batted in, and Alan Ray added two hits for visiting Hart in a Foothill League game. Luis Sanchez (4-0) got the win with 3 1/3 innings of relief.

SOFTBALL

Saugus 1, Burbank 0--Kerry Coudry pitched a perfect game for 6 1/3 innings before settling for a no-hitter in a nonleague game at Saugus. Coudry (9-1) walked a batter with one out in the sixth but retired the next two on a groundout and strikeout.

Kelly Kranz singled in Kim O’Leary for Saugus’ only run in the fourth. The Centurions (13-1) have won nine games in a row.

Calabasas 13, Santa Clara 3--Rene Zehr had two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Coyotes (9-1, 5-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Hoover 4, Bell-Jeff 0--Nancy Evans (8-2), who struck out 14 and did not allow a walk, threw six perfect innings for host Hoover in a nonleague game.

Evans retired 18 batters in order before surrendering a leadoff infield single in the seventh. She finished with a one-hitter.

Thousand Oaks 11, Agoura 2--Julie Olin, Dani Burns, Carrie Russell and Nicole Eberhard each had two hits to pace the Lancers’ 11-hit attack in a Cypress tournament game.
