COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Celebrates Rise in Softball Poll With 1-0 Win
The Cal State Northridge softball team climbed 11 places, to No. 9, in the national coaches’ poll Tuesday morning, then notched its 14th consecutive win by beating host Cal State Long Beach, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon.
Northridge (35-17-1) scored the game’s only run on Patti Pearson’s fourth-inning single, which drove in Beth Calcante.
Kathy Blake pitched a three-hitter to improve to 19-3. Long Beach, which is ranked 20th, fell to 22-17.
VOLLEYBALL
UC Santa Barbara d. Cal State Northridge, 16-14, 15-10, 15-11--The Matadors lost for the fourth time in five matches, dropping their Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. finale in Santa Barbara.
CSUN will take a 10-6 conference mark into next week’s WIVA tournament. The Matadors are 16-10 overall. Santa Barbara is 13-11, 9-6.
BASEBALL
Mission 8, Pierce 2--Lazaro Campos had two doubles and a home run to lead the Free Spirit to a nonconference win at Pierce.
Joey Arnold and Josh Smaler each had two hits for Pierce (21-5), which lost for the second day in a row. Mission is 9-12-2.
Moorpark 13, Glendale 8--Tom Lunsford had three hits, including a double and home run, and five runs batted in to lead a 16-hit attack in Moorpark’s Western State Conference win.
Valley 2, Ventura 0--Mario Joy struck out pinch-hitter Chris Issacs with the bases loaded in the ninth to save Valley’s WSC win at home.
Oxnard 8, Santa Monica 3--Nick Frank and Adrian Estrada each had three hits for visiting Oxnard (3-21, 3-13) in a WSC game.
Cuesta 7, Canyons 3--Canyons committed four errors and gave up four unearned runs in a WSC loss at Cuesta.
