PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Sumner’s Double Propels Canyon to Victory

Tim Sumner’s two-run double in the fourth inning helped Canyon to a 4-1 victory over Santa Ana Valley in a Century League baseball game Friday in Santa Ana.

Jarrod Kula pitched a complete game to earn his fifth victory for Canyon (8-3-1 in league, 4-1-1). Armando Cueva hit a triple and pitched a complete game for Santa Ana Valley (5-8, 2-5).

In other Century League games:

El Modena 10, Orange 2--Todd Goerlinger was three for three with two runs batted in and a run scored for the visiting Vanguards (5-4-2, 3-2-2).

Foothill 7, Villa Park 4--Jason Vlcek had two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored for host Foothill (8-4, 5-1). Jason Schwary pitched four shutout innings in relief to earn his fourth victory. Villa Park is 4-7-2, 2-3-2.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 6, Heritage 5--Rick Miller, who had yielded Jason Thompson’s two-run, game-tying homer in the top of the second, singled in Greg Danz with one out in the bottom of the seventh as the Tartans won at Cooks Park to improve to 6-2, 2-1.

Liberty Christian 6, St. Michael’s 3--Mike Hoggatt was two for three, drove in three runs and scored once for the Minutemen (8-1, 3-0) at TeWinkle Park.

Liberty Christian starting pitcher Steve Caruso had to leave the game in the fourth inning after sustaining an ankle injury. The freshman right-hander, who entered the game with a 2-0 lead, struck out seven. Gabe Baltodano pitched 2 1/3 innings of two-hit relief to pick up the victory.

St. Michael’s is 0-3, 0-3.

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 17, Sherman Indian 2 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Nathan Lambie had three hits and three runs and pitcher Scott Williams, who had three RBIs and scored two runs scored, threw a one-hitter, striking out seven, for the visiting Flames (8-2, 2-0).

In the Express League:

Garden Grove Claremont 11, South Bay Lutheran 10 (8 innings)--With the score tied, 10-10, in the bottom of the eighth, Ike Moon led off with a walk for host Claremont (3-3, 3-0), stole second and third, then scored on the Lutheran catcher’s errant throw to third.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 4, Sunny Hills 3--Louie Peraza drove in Mark Rugprayoon with a double in the bottom of the sixth to give Buena Park (4-7, 3-3) the victory. Mark Veronda’s home run in the top of the inning had tied the score, 3-3, for the Lancers (3-3 in league). Roger Montenegro hit a two-run home run in the fifth for the Coyotes.

Fullerton 2, Sonora 1--Fullerton (8-3, 7-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win. Scott Siefen tied the score with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice and Daniel Chacon singled in the game-winner. Chacon was three for four today.

Sophomore Ryan Golisano, in his first varsity start, allowed three hits in 6 1/3 innings and Keith Ginter got the final two outs in the seventh and improved to 4-1. Sonora is 1-6 in league.

La Habra 5, Troy 4--La Habra got two runs in the seventh inning for the come-from-behind victory. With one out in the inning and La Habra trailing, 4-3, Jason Johnson walked and then stole second. The first run for the Highlanders was scored when Rusty Volkert singled Johnson to home. Dan Vivilacqua, pinch-running for Volkert, then stole second and Ken Huff singled Vivilacqua home, giving La Habra (6-5, 3-4) the victory. Troy is 2-5 in league.

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 8, Ontario Christian 6--Jeff Jennings (1-4) pitched 4 1/3 innings of two-hit relief as the host Eagles won for the first time after starting the season with 10 losses.

Mark Wilson hit a third-inning homer, and Pete Sears and Bobby Birtwell each drove in two runs for Capistrano Valley Christina (1-10, 1-4). Ontario Christian is 0-12, 0-6.

Each team made six errors.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 10, Century 2--Brett Nista struck out 10 and went four for four, with two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring three times for the visiting Hawks (7-5, 3-2).

Jason Pierson was three for four, drove in three runs and scored twice, and Dave Cosgrove hit a seventh-inning homer with one on for Laguna Hills.

Eric Valencia hit a solo homer in the sixth inning for Century.

Laguna Beach 8, Estancia 3--Max Borella was three for four, scored twice and drove in two runs for the visiting Artists (2-5, 3-9).

Trabuco Hills 7, Costa Mesa 2--Jason Teno hit a three-run home run in the sixth and Carey Smith pitched a complete game to earn his fifth victory for host Trabuco Hills (9-3, 7-0). Tom Fill and Dario Salz each had three hits, two runs scored and a double for Trabuco Hills.

In nonleague baseball:

Huntington Beach 2, Paramount 1--Howie Clark’s sacrifice fly drove in Mike Moutrey in the top of the sixth for the Oilers (13-1).

Eddie Burrell’s fifth-inning single brought in Steve Giffin with Huntington Beach’s other run.
