PREPS

Margarito Casillas of Hoover high finished third in the 3,200-meter event at the Arcadia Invitational track meet Saturday.

Casillas finished behind winner Angel Martinez of San Gabriel and Theo Molla of Tucson (Ariz.) University High.

Because of conflicts in school vacation schedules and gym availability, the boys’ and girls’ all-star basketball games between teams from the Glendale and Burbank areas will be held Saturday night at Glendale College.

The games, featuring high school seniors, were originally scheduled to be played last Friday.

Phil Sherman of Ribet Academy will coach the Glendale boys’ team and Drew Lord of Eagle Rock will coach the Glendale girls’ team.

The Glendale area will be represented by players from Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover, Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart, La Canada, St. Francis, Ribet Academy, Eagle Rock, Marshall, Franklin and Verdugo Hills.

The girls’ game begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by the boys’ game.

The Flintridge Prep water polo team and the Flintridge Prep boys’ volleyball and swimming teams were among 24 teams honored for their academic excellence by the Angels, the Ford Motor Company, the Murdy Foundation and the Southern Section.

The awards were based on cumulative grade-point averages in college prep classes from the fall 1991-92 semester.

The teams were introduced at Anaheim Stadium before a game between the Angels and the Chicago White Sox last week.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team improved its record to 10-18 and 6-12 in the Western State Conference with a 10-6 victory at Santa Barbara on Saturday.

The Vaqueros are participating in the Ventura tournament this week. They will conclude their conference schedule with an April 23 game against WSC-leader Pierce and an April 25 contest at Bakersfield.

After a two-week layoff, the Glendale College men’s tennis team resumes its Western State Conference schedule today at Santa Barbara.

The Vaqueros are led by sophomore singles player Ashot Smbatyan and freshmen singles player Brian Wildason, both of whom are unbeaten this season.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College baseball team entered the week 12-13 and 4-10 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after losing twice to Whittier last weekend.

Blair Slattery and Jeff Heberlein each had three hits in a game for the Tigers, who play nonconference games against Pt. Loma today and UC San Diego Tuesday.

Occidental resumes its SCIAC schedule April 24 with a three-game series against Pomona-Pitzer.

The Occidental men’s and women’s track teams will compete in a triangular meet against Claremont and Caltech Saturday at Pomona College.

Occidental’s women’s team is coming off a 71-61 dual meet victory over UC Santa Barbara.

Jacqui Dent won the 100-meter and 800-meter events and ran the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay. Other multiple winners were Andrea Koenig in the long jump, triple jump and 400 relay; Mashairi Dunn in the 200, 400 and 400 relay, and Becky Kopchick in the 1,500 and 3,000.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Matt Ward, Verdugo Hills and Ricky Catano, Franklin--Ward, a senior, hit three home runs and a double in the Dons’ 15-6 victory over Hollywood.

Catano, a sophomore, had 10 strikeouts in a 6-3 complete-game victory over Belmont.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jacqui Dent, Occidental--Dent gave the Tigers a dual meet victory over UC Santa Barbara with an outstanding performance on the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay.

Occidental was leading, 65-61, entering the relay, the meet’s final event. After taking the baton, Dent overcame a 10-meter margin to win the race and give Occidental the victory.

Dent also won the 100- and 800-meter events.

WHERE THEY ARE NOW

Brad Holland--Holland, who played basketball and football at Crescenta Valley High, was named head basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton, succeeding John Sneed.

Holland, 35, has been working as an assistant at UCLA.

MISCELLANY

Don Nygord of La Crescenta placed 14th in the air pistol event of the U.S. World Cup shooting competition at Chino.
