Shot Heard ‘Round the County: Westminster baseball Coach Chris Sorce called Ocean View outfielder Rich Crowe’s home run last week “one of the longest homers I’ve ever seen a high school kid hit.”

Crowe hit a first-inning homer that sailed well over the 360-foot sign in left-center field and landed between third and second base on the freshman field. Crowe’s father, Lowell, said he measured the spot where the ball landed from the varsity field and estimated the ball sailed 490 feet.

“It was out in a heartbeat,” Sorce said. “You just don’t see a high school kid hit the ball that far. I’d say it went between 450 to 475 feet. We were trying to jam him and that’s what happens when you get the ball over the plate. I was just hoping somebody wouldn’t get hurt.”
