Northridge Names Patterson Women’s Basketball Assistant

Robin Patterson was named Cal State Northridge women’s assistant basketball coach Thursday by Coach Kim Chandler.

Patterson, 28, has served as volunteer coach for the Matadors since January while working as a biology and chemistry teacher at Simi Valley High. Northridge finished 2-24.

Patterson was the girls’ basketball coach at Lakeland High in Florida during the 1990-91 season. From 1987-90, she coached girls’ basketball at Galion High in Ohio.

In addition to developing the post players, Patterson will coordinate recruiting, handle team travel plans and develop and oversee the team’s conditioning.

Defending U.S. Amateur champion Mitch Voges of Simi Valley missed the 36-hole cut Friday in the Heritage Classic at Hilton Head Island, S.C., but at least he was in good company.

Voges fired rounds of 75 and 72 to finish at five over par on the 6,912-yard, par-71 Harbour Town Golf Links. Also at five over were Greg Norman (76-71) and Larry Nelson (72-75).

The California Beach Party longboard surfing championships will be held April 25-26 at Surfer’s Point in Ventura.

Preliminary competition will get under way April 25 at 6 a.m. Age brackets include junior men’s 19 years old and under; men’s 20-29, 30-39 and 40-49; senior men’s 50 and older, and an open women’s division.

The American Youth Soccer Organization will hold sign-ups in Ventura on April 25 and May 9 for the fall season. Registration will be held at Anacapa Junior High from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. An evening registration session will take place May 14 at Poinsettia Elementary School from 6 to 7 p.m.
