Traditional baseball superstition says you don’t talk about the possibility of a no-hitter during a hitless pitching performance. Last Wednesday, Huntington Beach gave the tradition a new twist: The Oilers barely talked about it after the game. Ward didn’t allow a hit in the Oilers’ 9-1 victory over Bolsa Grande in a consolation game of the Pride of the Coast tournament, but there was no jubilant celebration, according to Huntington Beach Coach Mike Dodd. “Jon didn’t mention anything about the no-hitter,” Dodd said. “We just went out and congratulated Bolsa Grande like we do after any other game.” Professional scouts, however, are apparently still excited about Ward, who improved to 6-0 with a 1.34 earned-run average. Dodd said 12 to 13 scouts called Sunday to find out when Ward pitches next.

Other top performers:

Chad Carvin, who set the Laguna Hills school record in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing the first leg of the 200 relay in 21.58 seconds in a dual meet against Simi Valley. Laguna Hills won the relay in 1:30.21 to set a school record.

Charlie Davidson, of Saddleback who won the 110 high hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays, finishing in 14.22 seconds, the fastest time in the Southern Section this season. He also finished third in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 38.5.
