Newbury Park 4, Channel Islands 3--Senior left-hander Bryant Fick pitched a four-hitter and recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead the Panthers (9-8, 4-3) to an upset of Channel Islands (15-3, 5-2) in a Marmonte League game.

Fick (4-3) walked seven and hit two batters but managed to keep Channel Islands, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, from scoring until the seventh inning.

“We must have struck out five times on pitches in the dirt,” Channel Islands Coach Don Cardinal said. “(Fick) did a great job. I guess we weren’t ready to play.”

Newbury Park catcher Robert Fick, Bryant’s uncle, hit two doubles, including a two-run double to key a three-run fifth inning. Jeff Hook also had two hits for the Panthers

Angel Aragon (7-2) of Channel Islands allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked four. With two out and the bases loaded in the seventh, Aragon walked Rich Adams to give Newbury Park a 4-0 lead.

Royal 15, Thousand Oaks 3--Shane Slayton was three for three with a homer, two doubles, four RBIs and two runs as the visiting Highlanders (11-4, 6-1) moved into first place with a Marmonte League win.

Mike Wolford went two for four with a triple and three RBIs for Royal, which came back from a 3-2 deficit with a seven-run third inning.

Center fielder Jim Chergey hit his sixth home run in eight games for Thousand Oaks. Chergey, a senior, is batting better than .600 during that stretch.

Agoura 10, Camarillo 9--A sacrifice fly by Bryan Richards drove in Bryan Bartlett with the winning run in the seventh for the Chargers (7-10, 3-4). Ed Gillis was three for three with a home run, three RBIs and three runs for Agoura.

Alemany 10, St. John Bosco 5--Gabe Villasenor hit a home run, double and single to lead Alemany (13-5-1) into tonight’s championship final of the St. Paul tournament at Cal State Los Angeles.

Chris Tashima doubled and singled, Rene Rodriquez had two singles and Andy Dominique doubled for Alemany.

Bell-Jeff 10, Bosco Tech 4--Brian Lee went four for five with a double and six RBIs to guide the Guards (3-11) to a third-round win in the St. Paul tournament.

Nester Villanea (3-1) pitched four innings of scoreless relief, allowing only two hits, to pick up the win. He was also two for two.

Chatsworth 14, Reseda 1--David Stevenson (four RBIs) and Matt Gorman (three RBIs) each had three hits to lead the host Chancellors (8-8, 5-5) past Reseda (2-12, 0-10) in a West Valley League game.

Kennedy 6, San Fernando 1--Tommy Manning struck out eight and pitched a one-hitter to lead the host Golden Cougars (14-5, 7-3) to a North Valley League victory. David Bourne paced the attack, going two for three with two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Jose Nunez hit an inside-the-park home run for San Fernando (6-8, 3-7) in the fourth to break up Manning’s no-hit bid.

Beverly Hills 9, Harvard-Westlake 8--Tarlin Ray and Don Camacho each had three hits and three RBIs, but the Wolverines (10-6) lost the nonleague game.

Providence 5, Chadwick 4--Pitcher Robert Mena struck out 13 to lead Providence to a nonleague win at Chadwick. Rick Mena went three for four with three RBIs for Providence (8-1, 6-0).

BOYS’ TRACK

Channel Islands 77, Simi Valley 59--Channel Islands lost eight of the 14 individual events but won both relays in the Marmonte League meet at Simi Valley.

Jay De Jesus led Channel Islands with victories in the high jump (5 feet 10 inches) and the long jump (20-10). Dorian Valdez of Simi Valley won the 440 (51.7) and the mile (4:31.1).

GIRLS’ TRACK

Channel Islands 75, Simi Valley 51--Shenalle Rogers won the 100 meters (12.9), the 220 yards (27.8), and the 440 (1:01.0) for visiting Channel Islands in the Marmonte League meet.

Teammate Dolores Tuimoloau doubled in the shotput (37-3) and the discus (122-3).

Rikke Pedersen won the 880 (2:22.6), mile (5:36.0) and the two mile (11:21.0) for Simi Valley.
