HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Aztecs Continue Unbeaten Streak

Montgomery High School continued to race toward the Metro Conference title on Thursday, and did it going away. One game from reaching the midway point in the season, the second-ranked Aztecs (15-3, 6-0) remained unbeaten in league play by scoring a 6-0 victory over Mar Vista (12-6-1, 4-2).

Oscar Robles carried the Aztecs with his pitching and hitting. On the mound, Robles improved to 4-2 by pitching a three-hitter and striking out nine batters. He also feasted at the plate, going three for four and scoring two runs.

Julio Saldana went three for four with one RBI, and Alex Palacio (two RBIs) and Jose Lorenzana (RBI) added two hits apiece for Montgomery.

The loss went to Ricky Quinones (2-2).

In other Metro Conference games:

Castle Park 4, Chula Vista 0--Alex Lontayo scattered four hits to lift Castle Park, which got a double and two RBIs from Vico Moreno. Alex Dearie and Lontayo also had doubles for the winners. Chula Vista fell to 6-9, 0-5.

Bonita Vista 9, Southwest 3--Bonita Vista took advantage of six walks, a hit batter, an error and two hits in the top of the seventh inning to score seven runs to overtake Southwest (5-8-1, 2-4). Five of the Barons’ runs in the inning were unearned. David Gonzalez led Bonita Vista with three hits and two RBIs.

Hilltop 5, Sweetwater 4--Richie Hinzo’s RBI in the bottom of the seventh tied the game, and Henry Mercado’s single with the bases loaded in the eighth scored winning pitcher Nathan Dighera with the winning run. Pablo Baltazar had a two-run single for Hilltop (9-8, 3-3). Sweetwater’s Robert Molina, Eric Gallardo and John Ortega had a single and RBI apiece.

City Central League

San Diego 6, Lincoln 3--Jacque Jones struck out 15, and teammate David Mendoza hit a two-run homer in the sixth to lead the Cavers.

Crawford 13, Madison 3--The Colts (8-7, 4-0) won for the fifth time in six games. Larry Haley (5-1) struck out five in six innings. Brian Gaske was three for three, scoring three times, to highlight Crawford’s 18-hit attack. Madison fell to 11-6, 2-1.

City Eastern League

Mira Mesa 5, Patrick Henry 1--The defending 3-A section champion rolled behind the one-hit pitching of Brendan Hause. Hause, a senior left-hander, fanned 11 Patriot batters, giving him 70 strikeouts for the season and a 7-1 record. A two-run single by Coleman Mullins keyed a five-run first inning for the third-ranked Marauders (14-1, 3-0). Patrick Henry is 6-9-2, 1-2.

Morse 14, Point Loma 5--Winning pitcher Alfred Enano (2-1) got as many hits for himself as he allowed, three, for the Tigers (8-6, 1-1). He also drove in a run and scored four times. Jorge Acosta was also a force with three hits and four RBIs. Point Loma (9-10-1, 2-2) committed eight errors.

City Harbor League

St. Augustine 4, Coronado 1--Pete Albers went three for three and had an RBI double to give No. 8 St. Augustine (16-2, 3-0) a 1-0 lead, but it was in the sixth inning that the Saints iced the Islanders. Javier Pamus had an RBI double and, after an intentional walk, Chris Borunda hit a two-run triple to put the game away. Winning pitcher Marco Inzuna (7-1) struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter; he now has allowed only two walks in the past 31 innings. Coronado is 10-7, 3-1.

City Western League

USDHS 7, University City 0--Kevin McDonald (6-0) pitched a two-hitter, struck out six and walked only two for No. 4 USDHS (13-3, 3-0). Aaron Blaire had a two-run triple, and David Cesena went two for three with two RBIs to support McDonald offensively. University City is 5-11, 1-2.

Kearny 5, La Jolla 3--Eddie Feistel went the distance to improve to 4-0 for the Komets (8-9-1, 2-2). Feistel and Marcel Jones had two hits apiece. Richard Cesena keyed Kearny’s three-run third inning with a two-run triple. The Vikings fell to 9-8, 0-3.

Nonleague

Hoover 8, Clairemont 7--Byron Limbrick relieved starter Pasqual Casas in the second with one out, four runs in and runners at the corners. He struck out two batters to end the uprising and went the rest of the way striking out seven more. Limbrick was also two for four with two RBIs, and teammate Damian Morrison was two for three with three RBIs as Hoover improved to 3-12, 1-3.

Carson City 9, Mission Bay 5--Mission Bay, saving its best arms for Saturday’s showdown at USDHS, used six players, including four non-pitchers, in the loss to the Senators (20-2). Stanford-bound right-hander Pete Lushich went to distance for Carson City, scattering nine hits. Joe Enomoto went two for three with a triple and two RBIs for the Buccaneers (12-5).
