Despite that, Westchester High was able extended its winning streak to 14 games by defeating Mira Costa, 10-5, Saturday in the semifinals of the Redondo Beach baseball tournament.

With the victory, the Comets (14-4) advance to play El Segundo in the championship game, which is tentatively scheduled for May 16.

Westchester built an early 5-0 lead, but Mira Costa fought to within 5-4 before the Comets were able to secure the victory.

“We didn’t look real good today,” Westchester Coach Ron Kasparian said. “The pitching was shaky and our defense was spotty and we just didn’t play all that well.

“But we got some big hits and got them at the right time. When you’re on a streak like we are, you’re going to win some games that maybe you shouldn’t. That’s what happened to us today.”

Lance D’Antignac (3-0), making his first start after pitching a no-hitter against Manual Arts on Tuesday, gave up five hits, struck out four and walked five. Reliever Tim Taylor pitched the final two innings to earn his second save.

The Comets had nine hits to help overcome three errors that led to three Mira Costa runs.

Right fielder Shannon Gadson singled in two runs and drove in another with a triple and Bobby Jarman and Rodney Washington contributed two RBIs each. Center fielder Derrick Person had two hits, two stolen bases and a RBI.

After Mira Costa rallied to within 5-4, Westchester scored three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Leadoff hitter Al Watson scored the game’s first run on an error. Jarman, Gadson and Person followed with run-scoring singles to give the Comets their 5-0 lead.

Mira Costa scored in the first on Joel Garber’s fielder’s choice and added three more runs in the second an error and infield outs by Scott Combs and Greg Gilmer.

Jarman’s bases-loaded walk drove in a fourth-inning run, and an error and Washington’s sacrifice fly gave the Comets an 8-4 lead.

Westchester added two more in the sixth on Gadson’s triple and another sacrifice fly by Washington.

“We didn’t play well as a team today,” Mira Costa Coach Jim Beaumont said. “Our pitchers were all over the place, we had enough defensive lapses to help them out and, give them credit, they stung the ball and got the hits when they needed them.”

In his first start of the season, loser Dean Brunkhardt (0-1) gave up four hits and walked four in three innings for Mira Costa (12-6).
