PREP ROUNDUP : University Defeats Corona del Mar to Win Sea View League Tennis Title

University clinched its second consecutive Sea View League boys’ tennis championship with an 11-7 victory over Corona del Mar Tuesday at Corona del Mar.

The Trojans (16-1, 9-0 in league), who are ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division 4-A, got sweeps at No. 1 doubles from the team of Bryan Shapiro and Robbie Wilkins and at No. 3 doubles from Ali Esna and Ryan Spruston. University won seven of nine doubles sets to offset a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 singles by Dave Bain of third-ranked Corona del Mar (7-2 in league).

University has won 38 of 41 matches over the past two years and can wrap up a second consecutive undefeated league season Thursday with a victory over Woodbridge.

In Angelus League boys’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 14, Bishop Amat 4--Matt Waugh and Ryan Murphy swept at No. 1 doubles for Santa Margarita (13-3, 8-0) and Jason Scanlon won two sets at No. 1 singles for the league-leading Eagles.

Servite 16, St. John Bosco 2--Gary Schoeman, Servite’s No. 3 singles player, swept his sets to pace the Friars (8-10, 5-3). Schoeman beat St. John Bosco’s No. 1 singles player, Chris Eccles, 7-5, in the last match of the day after being behind, 5-2.

In Sunset League boys’ tennis:

Marina 14, Huntington Beach 4--Christian Butala swept at No. 1 singles for visiting Marina (17-1, 10-0). Tony Newton and Brian Yee swept at No. 1 doubles for Huntington Beach (9-8, 8-4).

In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:

La Quinta 13, Garden Grove 5--Doubles partners Hien Wul and Peter Lam swept their sets to help La Quinta (17-1, 10-0) take sole possession of first place in the league. Garden Grove drops to second. Steve Ho swept his sets for Garden Grove (13-4, 7-2).

In the South Coast League individual golf finals:

Richardson Wins--Scott Richardson of Dana Hills had a 36-hole total of four-over-par 148 to win the championship by one stroke over El Toro’s Ben Garner at Rancho California. Garner held a two-stroke lead going into the 35th hole, but made a triple bogey, and Richardson birdied the hole to take the lead.

In Orange League golf:

Brea-Olinda 207, Western 210--Jeff Botch and Mike Peterson each shot two-over 39 for Brea Olinda (12-5, 6-2) at Imperial. Tiger Woods shot even-par 37 for Western (5-3 in league).

In Sunset League golf:

Edison 207, Ocean View 212--David Searle shot one-over 37 for Edison (9-6, 4-3) at Mile Square. Chad Plunkett shot 39 for Ocean View (3-4).

In nonleague golf:

Mater Dei 208, Woodbridge 225--Freshman Scott Jordan shot five-over 40 to lead the Monarchs (5-6) at Western Hills Country Club.

In South Coast League boys’ volleyball:

Irvine 3, Mission Viejo 0--Brent Eldridge had 10 kills for host Irvine (13-0, 7-0), the top-ranked team in the county, which won, 15-1, 15-7, 15-10.
