Toreros’ Jones Is Named MVP

Lynda Jones, a 6-foot-2 senior center/forward, has been named University of San Diego’s most valuable player on the women’s basketball team.

Jones, the lone USD representative on the all-West Coast Conference team, led her team in rebounds (7.7 per game) and was second in blocked shots (1.5), third in scoring, (12.4), and tied for first in steals (1.4). She finished her career as USD’s third all-time leading scorer (973 points) and rebounder (586). She is also second in blocked shots (137) and fifth in free throws made (171).

The team captain, Jones went to Mt. Carmel High School.

Senior Julie Doria was named the top defender and junior Angie Straub received the Miss Hustle Award for the second consecutive year. Freshman Vicki de Jesus was named the most improved player.

USD finished 9-17.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The community college state tournament will be held at Palomar College Friday and Saturday. The four-team tournament opens with second-seeded Orange Coast College vs. No. 3 Pierce at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by No. 1 Long Beach City College vs. No. 4 DeAnza at 7:30.

The third-place game will begin Saturday at 5 p.m., followed by the championship at 7:30. Admission is $5, $2 for students and seniors.

BASKETBALL

Torrey Pines, Division II boys’ basketball champion, will have its awards banquet Sunday at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club at 4 p.m. The dinner will feature speakers Chet Forte of XTRA-AM and USD men’s Coach Hank Egan. TRACK AND FIELD

The UC San Diego Open on Saturday will feature some of the top athletes in the world, including former 1,500 meter world champion Abdi Bile of Somalia, whose best is 3 minutes 31 seconds and clocked 3:34 in 1991. The 800 meters features Brazilan Jose Luiz Barbosa and American Ocky Clark. Barbosa was No. 1 in the world most of last year and Clark was ranked fourth in the U.S. Other men include pole vaulter Doug Wicks who cleared 18- 1/2 last weekend; shot put specialist Jim Doering, who put 69-0 on Sunday; and UCSD’s Scott Sargeant, who qualified for the Olympic trials with a 214-1 toss in the hammer.

On the women’s side, Debbie Marshall will attempt to break the two-minute mark in the 800 meters. She will be pushed by former San Diego standouts Laura Chapel (University City) and Leslie Noll (Mt. Carmel), who set a San Diego Section record in 1985 (2:08.00). The 1,500 features Olympic hopefuls Buffy Rabbitt, Polly Plummer, and former San Diego high school stars Kristina Hand (Fallbrook) and Darcy Arreola (Grossmont).

Field events begin a 11 a.m., running events at noon. Admission is free at UCSD’s Triton Stadium, but there is a charge for parking.
