Dominguez Hills to Play Pomona

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team is scheduled to play Cal Poly Pomona in a three-game California Collegiate Athletic Assn. series.

The teams will play today at 3 p.m. at Pomona and Saturday at noon in a doubleheader at Dominguez Hills.

Dominguez Hills (20-22-1) is in fifth place in the conference at 10-14. Pomona (18-26) is fourth at 11-10.

Pomona has won two of the three games between the teams, including a 7-4 victory last week.

The Toros had lost 10 of 11 games prior to a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino last week. But Dominguez Hills won three of four games from San Bernardino.

Senior center fielder John Otte was nine for 11 with three extra-base hits in the final three games of the San Bernardino series. Otte is batting .325.

Senior outfielder Ernie Soto is batting .347 with a team-leading 29 runs batted in, and junior catcher Shawn Wickoff is batting .331.

Junior starting pitcher Tom Ball is 8-4 with a 2.10 earned-run average, and senior starter Mark Tranberg is 5-4 with a 3.83 ERA.

The Dominguez Hills women’s softball team had three players selected to the All-CCAA first team and a fourth named to the second team.

Pitcher Julie Borquez, third baseman Nicole Stelter and designated hitter Melissa Punch were first-team selections. Lety Carranza made the second team as a utility player.

Borquez, a senior, had a 12-6 record and 0.88 ERA as a pitcher and batted .264.

Punch, a junior, had a .403 batting average and led the Toros with five home runs and 30 RBIs.

Stelter, a junior, batted .278 and Carranza, a senior, batted .318 with two homers and a team-leading nine triples and nine stolen bases.

The Toros finished third in the CCAA at 10-14.

The Manhattan Beach Track Club will start its long-distance running program at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach.

Workouts will be at 6 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday at Mira Costa and at 7:30 a.m. each Saturday at Malaga Cove Plaza in Palos Verdes.

There is no charge for the first three workouts. There is a $96 annual fee.

Harbor College will hold its second annual golf tournament at 11 a.m. June 1 at Los Verdes Country Club.

The cost is $80 and includes green fees, cart rental and dinner. Proceeds will go toward the Harbor football program.
