PREP ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Beats El Toro in Four Games

Bryan Lawson had 14 kills to lead Capistrano Valley to a four-game victory over El Toro in a South Coast League boys’ volleyball match at Capistrano Valley.

Aaron Garcia added 13 kills and three aces for the Cougars (12-2, 7-1), who are ranked fifth in Orange County. The Cougars won 15-5, 15-3, 13-15, 15-10. Adam Paugh had 11 kills for El Toro (5-7, 4-4).

In Century League boys’ volleyball:

El Modena 3, Valencia 1--Jon Leedom had 24 kills for host El Modena (10-1, 6-1), which won 8-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-12. Jon Young had 25 kills for Valencia.

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Cypress 3, El Dorado 2--B.J. Ewen had 12 kills and center Dave Spegon had 36 assists for visiting Cypress (8-6, 2-3).

Foothill 3, Los Alamitos 0--Rich Lambourne had 19 kills for visiting Foothill (9-3, 5-2), which won 15-13, 20-18, 15-8. Los Alamitos is 8-4, 3-4.

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

Garden Grove 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Tom Hastings and Mike Herrera each had nine kills as visiting Garden Grove (10-6, 10-2) won 15-2, 15-10, 15-12.

La Quinta 3, Kennedy 1--Sam Barbee had 22 kills and Kevin Doane added 16 for La Quinta (9-5, 8-4) in the 15-10, 15-12, 15-17, 15-1 victory. Kennedy fell to 5-7 overall and in league play.

Santiago 3, Rancho Alamitos 2--Hoang Nguyen had 19 kills for Santiago, which won 20-18, 15-10, 10-15, 9-15, 16-14. Nervahn Phonexay had 18 kills for host Rancho Alamitos (6-10, 5-7).

Pacifica 3, Los Amigos 2--Jim Green had 17 kills and Erik Huhta had 15 kills. Mike Shoemaker had 46 assists. Pacifica is 9-7, 7-5.

In Pacific Coast League volleyball:

Costa Mesa 3, Century 1--Khang Lai had 12 kills as Costa Mesa (4-9, 2-6) rebounded from a first-game loss for a 4-15, 15-10, 15-4, 15-12 victory. Century is 0-8 in league play.

In Sea View League boys’ volleyball:

Corona del Mar 3, Woodbridge 2--Derek Slingsby had 28 kills and Doug Hesse had 22 as Corona del Mar rallied from a 2-0 deficit in games to win the battle for second place, 9-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-7. Jeremy Mape added 16 kills and Ryan Steelberg had 61 assists and 15 kills for the Sea Kings (8-6, 6-2). Woodbridge is 5-3.

In Angelus League boys’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 15, Mater Dei 3--Senior Jason Scanlon won his sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Kent Policky won his sets, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3. Santa Margarita is 14-4, 9-0.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Brea-Olinda 12, Savanna 6--Antoine Tran and Brian Lee swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, for Brea-Olinda (14-4, 5-3). Todd Merryman swept his singles sets for Savanna (4-14, 1-7).

Western 18, Anaheim 0--Junior James Yu won his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1. Doubles team Quoc Tran and Dean Ras won their sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. Western is 13-2, 7-1.

In Empire League boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 15, Katella 3--Junior Mike Burges swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. The doubles team of Kyle Acree and Jeff Lawson won its sets, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3. Esperanza remains undefeated 17-0, 9-0.

In nonleague badminton:

Estancia 16, Garden Grove 3--Vickie Au won both her singles matches for the first time this season for Estancia (16-0), which won its 36th consecutive match over a two-season span.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Capistrano Valley 112, Orange 58--Jake Yokota, Brian Myer and Trevor Meyer each won two events for visiting Capistrano Valley (7-3). Yokota won the 500 freestyle in 4:56.11 and the 100 backstroke in 59.77. Myer won the 50 free in 24.00 and the 100 free in 52.95. And Meyer won the 200 individual medley in 2:05.19 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.09.

Villa Park 128, Fullerton 46--Matt Cornue won the 200 individual medley (2:12.37) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.96) for Villa Park (9-3, 4-1).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Capistrano Valley 108, Orange 62--Cathy Carone, Lisa Jacob and Tracey McCalley each won two events for visiting Capistrano Valley (5-5). Carone won the 200 free in 2:01.65 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.70; Jacob won the 200 individual medley in 2:12.15 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.02, and McCalley won the 100 free in 57.66 and the 500 free in 5:18.61.
