MEN’S TENNIS

After winning four of six singles matches, San Diego State was confident it would win the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah, and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.

However, No. 2 New Mexico (18-7) swept doubles play and scored a 5-4 victory over top-seeded SDSU (17-8), ending the Aztecs’ season.

“I don’t think we’ll get an at-large berth--I think it came down to today’s match,” SDSU Coach Hugh Bream said. “We were not quite consistent enough and didn’t get the wins that we needed (during the season).

“It was a little bit like today. We put ourselves in a position to determine whether or not we went (to the NCAA Championships), but the other team played a little bit better down the stretch and we didn’t close out the opportunties that we had.”

The loss in the finals was the third in a row for SDSU, which fell to Utah, 5-1, in 1990, and to New Mexico, 5-3, in 1991. SDSU defeated New Mexico earlier this season, 5-4.
