Simi Valley High first baseman Aaron Fischer, who batted .473 with a region-leading 38 runs batted in last season, still has not fully regained his stroke after suffering an injury to his left ankle in early March.

A recent surge pushed Fischer’s batting average to .293 (17 of 58), well below his career average of .426 entering the season. Fischer, who had nine home runs and nine doubles last season, has not suffered a power outage. He has five home runs and a team-leading 23 RBIs.

Streaks: Saugus’ baseball team has won 12 games in a row since a 9-7 loss to Alemany on March 17.

St. Bonaventure junior John McNamara had a 16-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday after going hitless in two at-bats against Calabasas. McNamara, who is batting .500 (27 for 54), had hit safely in all 15 games this season and the final game of last season. . . . Glendale senior Mark Haft had six hits in 10 at-bats last week to raise his average from .314 to .377. Haft’s on-base percentage is .566.

Freddie Edwards of Antelope Valley has hit safely in nine consecutive games to raise his average from .172 to .258 (16 for 62). . . . The average of Oak Park’s Jeff Gibbons has fallen from .421 to .298 over the past 12 games. Gibbons has only four hits in the past nine games.

Offense: Seven players have hit at least one home run for Simi Valley, which has 26 homers. Junior center fielder Kevin Nykoluk leads with nine.

Rio Mesa is 34 for 38 in stolen-base attempts. Leadoff hitter Dan Comando is 13 for 14. . . . Royal had five stolen bases in as many attempts in a 4-2 loss to Westlake last week. The Highlanders are 45 for 49.

Hueneme’s Casey Bolen is 20 for 24. His next stolen base will set a single-season high in Coach Reg Welker’s 13-year career at Hueneme. “He is smart and quick,” Welker said. “And those are two pretty good things to have.”

Fourth-place Calabasas has seven .300 hitters, more than the top three teams in the Frontier League combined. In a three-game stretch last week, the Coyotes scored 43 runs. Mark Warshaw epitomized Calabasas’ surge, raising his average from .151 to .304. He was nine for 13 with six runs and seven RBIs. Colin Fields was eight for 12 and raised his average from .286 to .400.

Montclair Prep has a team batting average of .398, and each starter is batting .300 or better. Leadoff hitter Darryll Dent is the only starter with fewer than 13 RBIs.

Pitching: Simi Valley reliever Trevor Leppard has appeared in 16 games, two shy of Scott Radinsky’s 1986 school record. Leppard, a junior right-hander, is 7-1 with three saves and a 2.71 earned-run average.

Glendale’s starting rotation of David Gantt and Jason Greenberg has given up 63 runs, only 32 earned. Gantt (4-2, 2.99) has given up 30 runs, 16 earned. Greenberg is 4-3 and has a 2.24 ERA.

Miscellaneous: Chaminade leadoff hitter Justin Giovannettone might be the area’s unofficial black-and-blue champion. Giovannettone, a junior outfielder, has been hit 11 times But that might not hurt as much as another number: After a 3-1 start, Chaminade has lost 19 games in a row.. . . . Through 18 games, Crescenta Valley has not had a triple. “We’re getting close,” Coach Tony Zarrillo cracked. “We’ve had a couple of long doubles.”

Moorpark is 15-1, but Rob Walker has hit the team’s only home run. “It’s tough because we don’t play where there are any fences,” Moorpark Coach David Rhoades said. “None that are reachable, anyway.”

Grant has outscored opponents, 137-49, in 16 games. “It’s especially nice for our pitchers,” Coach Tom Lucero said. “Last year we didn’t get the runs.” With six games remaining in Valley Pac-8 Conference play, Grant has surpassed last year’s run total of 93. The Lancers have scored 101 runs in 11 conference games.

Kevin Brown of L.A. Lutheran has 46 steals in 11 games and has stolen home eight times.

Boys’ volleyball: Buena beat Ventura in three games Friday to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in school history. William Welser and Nate Hoffman combined for 34 kills and Aaron Arth added 46 assists for the Bulldogs, who will compete in the Southern Section 4-A Division.

Loc Tran had 30 kills and 21 digs to lead Cleveland to a win over Granada Hills and added 16 kills in a win over Reseda in matches last week.

Track and field: Competitors from small schools (fewer than 1,000 students) fared well in the Ventura County championships at Camarillo last week, winning seven of 31 events. Fillmore won four events, and Oak Park, Thacher and Santa Clara each won a single event.

Fillmore senior Nikki Shaw was a double winner in the girls’ 800 and 1,600. Shaw has won seven county titles, four in the 800 and three in the 1,500.

Swimming: Thousand Oaks’ boys have won 27 consecutive Marmonte League dual meets.
