HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Bailey Sets Birmingham Kill Mark in Volleyball Playoff Win

Josh Bailey had a school-record 41 kills to lead Birmingham High to a 15-12, 9-15, 15-8, 13-15, 15-7 victory over Verdugo Hills in a City Section 3-A Division first-round playoff volleyball match Wednesday at Birmingham.

Bailey also had nine blocks and Hye Kwon added eight blocks and 69 assists for Birmingham (11-3).

Kwon’s assist total was two shy of the school record he set last week against Van Nuys.

In other first-round City volleyball playoff matches:

Monroe d. L.A. CES, 15-6, 15-5, 15-12--Jean Masequesemay had 20 kills and eight blocks to lead the Vikings (8-4) in a 3-A match.

Poly d. Belmont, 12-15, 15-6, 15-3, 15-8--Ron Botley had 18 kills and Danny Ramirez had 35 assists as Poly (9-5) won a 3-A match at Sylmar High.

Granada Hills d. South Gate, 15-2, 6-15, 15-13, 15-10--Granada Hills’ Bobby Curtis led all players with 19 kills and teammate Greg Webb added 28 assists in a 4-A match at South Gate.

Mike Disimone had four service aces for Granada Hills (9-4).

Chatsworth d. San Pedro, 15-4, 16-14, 15-8--Marty Tack and Dan Nash each had 16 kills to lead host Chatsworth in a 4-A match.

Westchester d. Cleveland, 15-12, 15-6, 15-5--Loc Tran had 11 kills and Martin Malinis had 25 assists for Cleveland in a 4-A match.

Taft d. Hamilton, 15-11, 15-10, 15-6--Casey Sheahan and Amman Catalan each had nine kills as host Taft (11-1) won a 4-A match.

BASEBALL

Granada Hills 8, San Fernando 7--Alex Lavery went three for four and drove in four runs to lead Granada Hills in a North Valley League game at San Fernando.

Lavery’s three-run triple sparked a four-run outburst in the third that gave the Highlanders (14-4, 9-4) a 7-0 lead. Flavio Castro added three hits for Granada Hills.

Jose Nunez tripled and homered for San Fernando. Nunez’s homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, cut the Granada Hills lead to 8-6. It also tied the school single-season mark for homers with four.

After San Fernando (9-9, 5-8) closed to within one run and moved a runner to second, Matt Livingston recorded the final out in relief to earn a save.

El Camino Real 6, Reseda 2--Mike McLean and Evan Howland hit home runs on back-to-back pitches in the third inning to give the Conquistadores (12-6, 8-5) a 4-1 lead in a West Valley League game.

Daniel Cey went three for four and scored twice for El Camino Real, which moved into a three-way tie for first in league play with Chatsworth and Taft.

Monroe 15, Van Nuys 2--Chris Stell scored four runs as Monroe, which scored 11 times in the fifth inning, won a Mid-Valley League game at home.

Van Nuys starter Jaime Chacon allowed one hit through four innings but was taken out of the game after facing one batter in the fifth because of a sore back. Monroe had six hits in the fifth, and three batters were hit.

Kennedy 7, Cleveland 4--Jeff Tagliaferri doubled and tripled and Rick Nadeau hit an inside-the-park home run as host Kennedy (15-7, 8-5) won a North Valley League game.

Kennedy scored five runs in the second behind Jason Makohon’s leadoff triple, Tagliaferri’s two-run double and Nadeau’s three-run home run.

Alemany 9, Bishop Montgomery 5--Dave Castillo and Ed Bushey hit back-to-back doubles to break a 5-5 tie in the sixth, and Gabe Villasenor hit a three-run homer in the sixth as host Alemany (15-7-1, 7-3) won a Mission League game.

Crespi 14, Chaminade 1--The host Celts built an 8-0 lead after four innings, then added six runs in the fifth to remain tied for first in the Mission League.

Joe Ruggiero was four for four with two runs batted in and four runs. Brodie Van Wagenen was three for four, including a double. Jeff Suppan had a bases-loaded triple in the fifth. Kyle Carden was two for three with two RBIs.

Jorvic Salazar (3-1) pitched six innings, striking out three.

The loss was Chaminade’s 20th in a row.

Camarillo 7, Thousand Oaks 2--John Freedman and Andy Hall each blasted two-run home runs for visiting Camarillo (10-10, 3-8) in a Marmonte League game.

Hall was four for four and Freedman was two for three.

Senior right-hander Chris Gregg (4-2) went the distance, yielding 11 hits and walking none.

Westlake 5, Agoura 1--Brew Johnson’s two-run single highlighted a five-run first inning for host Westlake (11-9, 5-6) in a Marmonte League game.

Johnson, who was three for three, also had a run-scoring single in the third.

Royal 12, Newbury Park 1--Dave Landaker and Paul Taylor each had three hits as host Royal (14-6, 8-3) won a Marmonte League game.

Landaker had three RBIs and three runs. Taylor had two RBIs. Gene Strojek had two hits and Shane Slayton had two RBIs for Royal.

St. Genevieve 4, Bell-Jeff 2--Pinch-hitter Allen LaGuardia hit a two-run single to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning as host St. Genevieve (6-12, 1-5) won a San Fernando League game.

Fidel Jacobo had four hits. His leadoff single sparked the three-run fifth.

Ojai Valley 2, Thacher 1--Craig Handzlik drove in both Ojai Valley runs, the second a sacrifice fly in the sixth to decide the Condor League game at Ojai Valley.

SOFTBALL

Hoover 13, Pasadena 0--Nancy Evans and Tracy Christiansen combined on a second no-hitter in as many days to pace the Tornadoes (18-2, 6-0) in a Pacific League game.

Evans (18-2) struck out 14 batters and was perfect through five innings before being relieved by Christiansen in the sixth. Christiansen struck out five and walked one.

It was the third consecutive no-hitter for the duo.

Alemany 7, Bishop Montgomery 1--Krista Gomez (two for four) hit her fourth home run of the season in a three-run sixth inning to pace the first-place Indians (16-5, 5-1) in a Mission League game against visiting Bishop Montgomery (13-9, 2-4).

Gomez, who is batting better than .600, has 20 home runs.

Chaminade 3, Notre Dame 0--Bridget Hayes scattered four hits to lead the Celts (9-8, 1-5) to an upset of visiting Notre Dame (4-2 in league play) in a Mission League game.

Chatsworth 7, Reseda 6--Maggie Sherman’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Mitza Simpson with the winning run in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Sherman was three for four with one RBI. Amy Shapiro (5-4) pitched two innings in relief of Simpson to earn the win.

Sylmar 1, Birmingham 0--Traci Hanna stole third and scored on a throwing error in the sixth inning of a Mid-Valley League game at Birmingham.

Sylmar’s Krystina Moore (3-0) yielded only a first-inning single to go with six strikeouts and three walks.

North Hollywood 10, Poly 5--North Hollywood’s Poly Rector pitched five shutout innings and Rachel Fogelhut survived a five-run outburst by Poly in a Mid-Valley League game at Poly.

Campbell Hall 4, Cate 0--Kasey Cannon had nine strikeouts and a two-run triple to lead visiting Campbell Hall (10-4) to a nonleague win.

Oakwood 3, Harvard-Westlake 2 (10 innings)--The host Gorillas (8-6) scored three runs in 10th inning on six walks in a nonleague game.

GOLF

Foothill League individual qualifying tournament--Senior Jason Gore of Hart High shot a two-round total of 147 at Wilson Golf Course in Griffith Park to lead four golfers who advanced to the Southern Section finals May 26 at Hacienda Country Club.

Gore shot a 74 and a 73 on the par-72 course.

Also advancing were Joe Citro of San Gabriel (155), Adam Hill of Hart (157) and Steve Fukumoto of Schurr (162).

MEN’S TENNIS

Rain forced the postponement of the state junior college men’s tennis team championship match between Pierce and College of the Desert at Santa Barbara City College.

The match has not been rescheduled. Pierce enters the match 20-1.
