Greg Shockey broke three Cal State Northridge records and tied another during the Matadors’ three-game sweep of Grand Canyon last week.

Shockey holds school records for at-bats (819), runs (178) and doubles (52). His 150 runs batted in match Craig Clayton’s total amassed in 1989-91. Shockey has 268 hits, eight shy of Clayton’s mark.

Track and field: Charlotte Vines of Northridge moved within .05 seconds of the automatic qualifying standard for the U. S. Olympic trials in June on Monday when she timed a wind-aided 11.50 seconds to win the women’s 100 meters in the Northridge Open.

Tanya Lynch of Northridge equaled the provisional qualifying standard in the women’s triple jump for the NCAA championships next month when she leaped a wind-aided 41 feet 4 1/4 inches in the Northridge Open. Provisional qualifiers will be invited to compete in the Division I meet if the number of automatic entrants is below the desired number in an event.

Matador freshman Teresa Stricklin improved her personal best in the shotput to 45-7 1/2 to finish third in the Northridge Open. She is fifth on the all-time Northridge list.

Softball: Northridge has improved its team batting average by only two points from last season--inching from .255 to .257--but Coach Gary Torgeson believes this season’s team is “without question” the best hitting group he has had. A glance at the team’s other statistics helps prove his point.

In 69 games, the Matadors have hit 55 doubles (school record), 16 triples and 20 home runs (school record). In 66 games last season, Northridge hit 37 doubles, 10 triples and four home runs.

Last year, Beth Calcante (22) was the only player with 20 or more runs batted in. This year, five players have 20 or more: Calcante leads the team with 31, followed by Missy Cress (28), Tamara Ivie (28), Patti Pearson (25) and Kim Oakes (20). Calcante is the leading home run hitter in the nation with 10.

The 10th-ranked Matadors (45-23-1), who swept Cal Poly Pomona in their season-finale doubleheader Saturday, seem poised to receive their first NCAA Division I at-large bid to the regional playoffs.
