HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Holliday Outing Propels Chatsworth Into 3-Way Tie for 1st, 4-3

Reliever Eric Holliday pitched two shutout innings to preserve Chatsworth High’s 4-3 victory over El Camino Real on Wednesday and move the Chancellors into a first-place tie with El Camino Real and Taft in the West Valley League with one game remaining.

Chatsworth (14-10, 10-6) will play host to Taft on Monday; El Camino Real (14-7, 10-6) will play host to last-place Reseda.

Senior right-hander Brandon Nickens (5-2) earned the win, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three in five innings. Holliday, who recorded his third save, allowed two hits and walked one.

Randy Wolf had two of El Camino Real’s six hits.

In other baseball games:

Taft 10, Reseda 8--Justin Siegel came on with two out in the seventh and got Juan Romero to fly out, preserving host Taft’s West Valley League victory.

Taft (12-7-1, 10-6) led, 10-4, but Mike Sweeney, who relieved starter Brandon Witkow (4-4) to start the seventh, gave up four earned runs before Siegel came to the rescue and recorded his second save. Stacy Kleiner had two hits, including his third home run, and knocked in three runs. Warren Stewart, Gregg Zutler and Greg Rosenzweig each added two hits.

Ruben Guerra had three hits, Larry Trammel added two and Carlos Nunez knocked in three runs for Reseda (3-15, 1-15).

Quartz Hill 8, Saugus 6--Mike Casuncad slammed a homer and double with three runs batted in and two runs as the host Rebels (11-9, 7-7) broke Saugus’ 17-game winning streak in a Golden League game.

Javier Salinas (6-3) struck out six and allowed only two runs in 5 1/3 innings of relief to pick up the win. Saugus (19-4-1, 13-1) has already clinched the league title.

The Rebels rocked Saugus starter John Maggiora (4-1) for four runs in the first and three in the third. Jeff Bowne was three for four with two runs and Phil Kruger went two for three with an RBI for Quartz Hill.

Danny Cato was two for four with a two-run homer and Scott Himes went two for three with three runs and two RBIs for the Centurions.

Alemany 6, St. Paul 1--Kevin Tate hurled a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in his first start for the host Indians (16-8-1, 8-4) in a Mission League game. Gabe Villasenor was two for two with a two-run homer and Dave Castillo had a pair of doubles and two RBIs for Alemany.

Camarillo 10, Channel Islands 6--Junior catcher Colby Keener was two for three, including a three-run homer in fourth inning, as the visiting Scorpions (12-10, 5-8) knocked Channel Islands out of first place in the Marmonte League.

Camarillo hurler Chris Gregg (5-2) allowed four home runs and 10 hits, but survived to record the complete-game win. George Lopez was three for five with an RBI and a run for the Scorpions.

Jose Gastelum slammed two homers for Channel Islands (20-5, 9-4), and Angel Aragon and Chris Fullmer added homers.

Westlake 2, Thousand Oaks 0--John Snyder fired a three-hitter and struck out nine for visiting Westlake in a Marmonte League game. Snyder (6-4) also singled to open the fourth inning and scored on a single by Rico Lagattuta for the only run Westlake (12-11, 6-7) needed. Lagattuta and Brew Johnson each had two hits.

Craig Arnold of Thousand Oaks (4-20-1, 3-10) scattered seven hits in pitching a complete game.

Royal 14, Agoura 3--Senior Paul Taylor was four for four, including a home run and a pair of doubles, with six RBIs to lead the visiting Highlanders (15-7, 9-4) in a Marmonte League game. Taylor hit a leadoff home run in Royal’s four-run fourth. He added a run-scoring single in the fourth, a two-run double in the sixth and a two-run double in the seventh.

Senior right-hander Matt Goebel (7-3) struck out two, walked two and yielded five hits in six innings.

Harvard-Westlake 7, St. Genevieve 6--Tyler Atwood entered the game with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning and notched a strikeout to preserve host Harvard’s San Fernando Valley League victory.

Harvard (12-11, 4-5) took a 7-2 lead into the seventh, but St. Genevieve touched two relievers for four runs before Atwood recorded his second save. Brian Given had three hits and Jon Schaeffer added two hits, including his third home run.

Fidel Jacobo and Jose Sandoval each had three hits for St. Genevieve (0-9 in league play).

Bishop Montgomery 4, Chaminade 3--Ted Corcoran threw a four-hitter and struck out six, but the visiting Eagles (3-22, 0-11) suffered their 21st consecutive loss in the Mission League game.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 1, St. Paul 0--Alemany clinched at least a tie for its second consecutive Mission League title by moving one game ahead of visiting St. Paul.

The Indians (18-7, 8-1) scored twice in the third inning. Kathy Brown walked, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Krista Gomez. Steffanie Parks singled to score Brown.

Alemany freshman right-hander Sophie Contreraz (8-3) pitched a two-hitter and struck out two.

Hoover 6, Pasadena 0--Nancy Evans and Tracy Christiansen combined on a two-hitter and recorded nine strikeouts for the visiting Tornadoes (21-1, 9-0) in a Pacific League win. Brenda Lyon was two for four with two RBIs.

Harvard-Westlake 14, Faith Baptist 0--Lyndsay Sloane had six strikeouts for visiting Westlake (10-7, 5-3) in a San Fernando League game.

L.A. Lutheran 15, Pilgrim 4--Carrie Schaumann tossed a six-hitter and added three hits for visiting L.A. Lutheran in a Heritage League game. Holly Roepke had a pair of triples and Anna Lopez added two hits for L.A. Lutheran (16-1, 11-0).

VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. La Salle, 15-7, 15-3, 15-2--Host Thousand Oaks held La Salle to 12 points in a Southern Section 3-A Division wild-card match. Carrick Patterson (11 kills) Jason Hartman (10 kills), David Sotolov (six aces) and Bryant Edwards (31 assists) led Thousand Oaks (13-5).
