Border Mate Scores Upset in Hollywood Park Feature
Border Mate took control at the top of the stretch Thursday and scored a two-length victory over Now Showing in the $37,000 turf allowance feature at Hollywood Park.
Cozzy, with Alex Solis, set the early pace, but Border Mate, under Pat Valenzuela, edged ahead at the top of the stretch before pulling away in the drive. Now Showing, ridden by Chris McCarron, was outrun early before rallying to beat Cozzy by a neck.
A 12-1 shot, Border Mate covered the 1 1-16 miles in 1:40 2-5. She paid $26.80, $10.60 and $7.40.
Now Showing, at 4-1, returned $6 and $4.60, and Cozzy paid $5.40.
Following the top three were Cambrina, Galega, 3-2 favorite Coll, Gumpher, Secret Imperatrice, Officer Lea and Joyeuse Marquise.
The Irish-bred Border Mate, running for the first time in five months, earned $20,350 for the victory.
