Allison Wins, Crashes in Race at Charlotte
Davey Allison won NASCAR’s all-star race for the second consecutive year Saturday night, edging Kyle Petty at the finish line of The Winston before crashing into the wall in front of 133,000 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Allison had to be cut from his car by rescue workers after his Ford spun several times and came to rest on the infield grass.
He was taken to the infield hospital on a stretcher and was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for tests that showed he had suffered a concussion, bruised legs and a bruised lung, said track spokesman Eddie Gossage. Track officials said he was conscious and in stable condition.
The victory in the first night running of The Winston, a three-stage, 70-lap event, was worth $300,000 to the points leader in the Winston Cup standings.
