CS Northridge Brings in Pair of Soccer Recruits

Midfielders Ronald Lou and Kareem Lee have signed letters of intent to play soccer at Cal State Northridge. They are Coach Marwan Ass’ad’s first recruits for the 1992-93 season.

Lee led Damien High to 20 wins and a berth in the Southern Section 4-A Division championship match this year.

Lou was most valuable player at Villa Park High this year and was a two-time All-Century League selection. Lou played club soccer for North Huntington Beach and also played for a Los Angeles area team that qualified for the semifinals of the prestigious International Dallas Cup tournament.

Bob Burns of Granada Hills led eight qualifiers at Valencia Country Club for a spot in the 1992 U.S. Open golf championship at Pebble Beach.

Burns shot a 36-hole total of 138 to lead a field of 144 players. Also advancing in Monday’s play were Jon Fiedler of Camarillo (145) and Richard Greenwood of Encino (146). They advanced to sectional qualifying rounds in Daly City, Calif., later this month.

Kathi Morales, a sophomore outfielder on the Moorpark College softball team, has been named to the state junior college first team. Moorpark’s Heather Santiago, a freshman pitcher, and sophomore infielder Stevie Campbell and Pierce’s Jody Soto, a freshman utility player, were named to the second team.

Area gymnasts Charles Lakes and Bob Stelter placed in the top 18 in the all-around competition at the U.S Championships last weekend at Ohio State. Their top-18 finishes enabled them to advance to the U.S. Olympic trials, June 11-13, in Baltimore.

Stelter, who graduated from Burroughs High in 1986, placed 10th in the U.S. Championships.

Lakes, a former U.S. Olympian who finished 19th in the all-around in the 1988 Olympics, finished 18th in the U.S. Championships. Lakes is originally from Newhall and is coached by Dan Connelly at Gymnastics Olympica in Van Nuys.

Four other area gymnasts competed in the U.S. Championships. Jeff Bender of Lancaster finished 31st and James Guay of Canyon Country finished 35th.

In the junior division, Stephanie Lau of Camarillo finished 17th and Kris Carrison of Northridge finished 25th.

Mary Espino, an all-state guard last season at San Jose City College, has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal State Northridge.

Espino, 5-foot-5, averaged 17 points last season at San Jose (25-9).

Andy Martin and Dan O’Sullivan of the The Master’s College baseball team were selected to the NAIA All-Area 1 team. Martin, a junior first baseman, batted .324. O’Sullivan, a sophomore catcher, batted .352.

Area 1 is composed of four districts encompassing Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California.
