HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFFS : Crawford’s Kraynik Wins Girls’ Diving Title

Share

She knew and she didn’t know. Crawford senior Windy Kraynik followed a good season with a mediocre league meet, making her unsure of how she’d fare at the San Diego Section Diving Championships at Poway on Tuesday.

Kraynik fared just fine. She won the girls’ title, and set a new section record at the championship meet while she was at it. Kraynik’s 442.95 points broke the 1989 record of 436.95 set by Monte Vista’s Kristen Walls. Sophomore Rose Huelskamp of USDHS was second with 420.70 points and Kraynik’s sister Kristy, also of Crawford and a sophomore, was third with 409.80 points.

“My dad working the table and keeping track of my scores, but he wouldn’t let me know if I was winning. I didn’t know until the end,” said Windy Kraynik, who added that if she has known she was on a record pace, she “totally would have been so scared.”

Windy said that she knew in the back of her mind that she would have a good meet, but her performance in the league meet didn’t give her a lot of confidence. The key to her success Tuesday, although she didn’t even try her hardest dives, in her was her consistency.

“I smoked almost all my dives, that had a lot to do with it,” said Windy, who was seeded fifth going into the competition. Huelskamp was the top-seeded diver.

Windy, who also competes for for Dive San Diego is considering attending Cal State Northridge, Houston or Hawaii.
