Davis Love III concluded a five-under-par 65 round just before thunderstorms wiped out play Thursday in the Colonial tournament at Ft. Worth.

Craig Stadler was not so fortunate. He was four under par and playing the 18th hole at the Colonial Country Club when the sirens sounded, halting play.

Just as a week ago in the nearby Byron Nelson Classic, the storms forced an overnight delay, stranding 25 players on the course.

They marked their positions and were scheduled to return to complete their rounds this morning, with the second round to follow.

Of the players unable to finish, Stadler, Gene Sauers and Mark Calcavecchia were the only ones among the leaders.

Stadler was one stroke back while Calcavecchia and Sauers were each two under. Calcavecchia was through 13 holes, Sauers 16.

Love, who already has collected more than $1 million this season and is seeking a fourth victory in a 10-week span, shared the lead with Billy Mayfair.

Keith Clearwater, who won this event in his rookie season of 1987, was one stroke back.

He didn’t miss a green and wasn’t in danger of making a bogey. “It was kind of boring, really,” he said. “I didn’t do anything spectacular and I didn’t make any mistakes.”

Colleen Walker had eight birdies in a round marred by only one bogey and took a two-shot lead after the first round of the LPGA Corning Classic at Corning, N.Y.

Walker’s seven-under-par 65 tied a first-round course record set by Kathy Young in 1987.

Kim Williams, who qualified for the tour again this year after losing her card in 1989, was at 67 along with Kay Cockerill. Alice Miller and Michelle Estill were at 68.

Walker, who started on the back nine, made six birdies in her first nine holes and two more on the front nine. Her only bogey was on No. 8 when she missed the green with her approach, chipped to 10 feet and missed the par putt.

“I played really well,” said Walker, who is ninth on the LPGA money list. “I hit the ball really close and gave myself a lot of opportunities.”

Stephanie Maynor collapsed on the course Thursday morning, apparently with lung problems, after completing 12 holes. She was admitted to Corning Hospital for tests.
