Corey Pavin was simply out of touch for a while.

However, Pavin regained his putting stroke and took a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Colonial with a six-under-par 64 Friday at Ft. Worth.

“I feel like I’ve had only two good putting tournaments this year, Honda and the Masters,” said Pavin, who won the Honda tournament and was third at Augusta.

Pavin used only 25 strokes, including nine one-putts, on the greens softened by rain that delayed the finish of the first round to Friday morning.

Pavin credited his regained putting touch to a change in his grip, but the key shot in his round wasn’t a putt.

After scoring his only bogey on the 14th and finding himself in danger of drifting back into the pack, Pavin holed a 40-foot sand shot for a birdie on the 15th.

“I was in that bunker and I was thinking, ‘Oh, no, you’re letting a good round get away,’ ” Pavin said. “When I holed it, it just turned things around.”

“I feel confident that if I can get my putting back on track I can play better than I did last year, because I’m hitting the ball better,” Pavin said after completing two rounds at eight-under-par 132.

Craig Stadler had a bogey-free 67 and was one stroke back after coming back early to finish his opening round.

Davis Love III, a three-time winner this year and a co-leader after 18 holes, birdied the final hole for a 69 and was tied for third at 134 with Blaine McCallister (67) and Fulton Allem (65).

Ray Floyd moved into position with a 65 that put him at 135, tied with Mark Calcavecchia, Jay Haas, Mark Brooks, Keith Clearwater, Dillard Pruitt and Mike Standly.

Colleen Walker held off charging Jody Anschutz to maintain a one-shot lead after the second round of the LPGA Corning Classic at Corning, N.Y.

Walker birdied four holes and bogeyed two in a round of two-under-par 70 and was at nine-under-par 135 for two rounds.

“I couldn’t get it to 10 under,” Walker said. “But it wasn’t too bad.”

Anschutz shot a 67 that included an eagle at the par-five fifth hole and four birdies.

Lynn Adams shot a 70 and was at 139. The group at 140 included Michelle Estill (72), JoAnne Carner (71), Nancy Ramsbottom (71), Sherri Steinhauer (68), Katie Peterson-Parker (69) and Brandie Burton 70 are at 140.

Lee Trevino shot a five-under-par 65 for a one-stroke lead over Gary Cowan after the first round of the $550,000 Bell Atlantic tournament at Malvern, Pa.

Trevino, who has shot 27 consecutive rounds of par or better and won four Senior Tour events this year, sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to take the lead.

“I did three things extremely well today,” Trevino said. “I seem to be driving the ball better. I’m chipping and putting the ball well. I’m not pleased with my iron play. My irons are kind of crazy.”

Gibby Gilbert and Harold Henning shot 67s, and Jack Kiefer and Bob Reith each had 68s.

Gary Player, who birdied the last two holes, and Arnold Palmer were among five players at 69.
