NCAA SOFTBALL : Arizona Throws One Long Beach’s Way, 1-0

Share

Seventh-seeded Cal State Long Beach upset second-seeded Arizona, 1-0, in a controversial first-round game in the NCAA Division I women’s softball tournament at Oklahoma City on Friday.

Long Beach (40-30) scored on a freak play in the third inning. Amy Geldbach singled to right, stole second and came all the way around when the throw by Arizona catcher Jody Miller-Pruitt deflected off the helmet of batter Sandra Ross and landed in foul territory.

Defending champion Arizona (55-6) claimed Ross interfered with the throw and that the umpire should have called the play dead.

Top-seeded UCLA (50-2) plays today against California (47-14).
