UCI’s Archer Shoots 65 at Regional
Lyle Archer’s seven-under-par 65 equaled Friday’s best round at the NCAA West Regional men’s golf tournament at Tucson National Golf Course and helped UC Irvine remain in contention for a berth in the NCAA Championships.
Tournament leader Phil Mickelson of Arizona State also had a second-round 65, as did Warren Schutte of Arizona.
“I played really well and had some things go my way,” said Archer, who is third with a nine-under-par 135, three shots behind Mickelson. “I got a couple good bounces off shots that might have been marginal.”
The Anteaters are tied with Stanford for 11th place, two shots behind ninth-place Pepperdine. The top nine teams and two additional individuals advance to the NCAA Championships, June 3-6 in Albuquerque, N.M.
