Pierce College voluntarily forfeited six victories and a tie from the 1991 football season after school officials determined this week that a player had falsified his personal and academic records.

School officials concluded that defensive lineman Ed Staley is not who he claims to be and because of a violation of state transfer rules was not eligible to participate in a sport.

Staley, listed in the Pierce program as a 6-foot-4, 310-pound freshman, played for Ventura College in 1989 under the name of Ron E. Staley, according to Pierce Athletic Director Marian McWilliams.

The Brahmas, who finished 6-2-1 in Western State Conference play and 7-3-1 overall, forfeited those games in which Staley participated. Pierce’s 31-14 victory over Compton on Oct. 12 will remain as the Brahmas’ lone victory. Officially, Pierce’s record will be 1-10.

Pierce officials, at the request of Ventura Coach Dick James, began probing the status of Staley’s eligibility after the season. After obtaining records from Ventura officials, McWilliams and her staff determined that Ed Staley and Ron E. Staley were one and the same.

When Staley enrolled at Pierce in the fall, he signed an eligibility form stating that he had never been enrolled in another college.

“He falsified the eligibility form,” McWilliams said. “He not only lied about that, he changed his name and got a different Social Security number from the one he had at Ventura.”

Efforts to reach Staley, who is still enrolled at Pierce, were unsuccessful.

Staley presented school officials with a driver’s license--with his picture and the name of Aaron Edward Staley--in an attempt to prove his identity, Pierce officials said.

“This is a boy who is well aware of what’s happening and how the system works,” McWilliams said. “I didn’t realize it was so easy to get a Social Security number, but evidently it is.”

McWilliams is not sure if Staley’s name is Ed or Ron--or both--but she is convinced that he played at Ventura.

State junior college rules prohibit a transfer student from competing in athletics until they have completed 12 units and maintained a 2.0 grade-point average at the new school.
