Share

Joel Jordan of the University of San Diego High School won his second consecutive San Diego Section boys’ diving title Friday at Poway High.

Though Jordan scored nearly 35 more points than last year, he needed almost every point this year to defeat Bay Dobbins of Grossmont.

Jordan totaled 439.85 this year, 1.55 better than Dobbins’ 438.30. Both marks were good for All-American consideration.

Four of the next five places went to Poway divers. Pat Beam was third with a score of 391.45, Bill Carr was fourth at 368.50, Brian Flower was sixth at 348.70, and Bryce Schanback was seventh at 339.75. Gregg Brooks of Monte Vista was fifth at 352.80.

Jordan became the sixth diver to win consecutive section titles. Oddly, Greg Louganis, who went to Valhalla, was not one of the others. Louganis, who set the section scoring record of 566.76 in 1977, also won in 1975, but not in ’76.
