Western’s Tiger Woods will attempt to become the fourth player to win consecutive Southern Section individual golf championships today at the Hacienda Country Club in La Habra Heights.

Woods, who as a freshman last season finished three strokes ahead of Richard Son of Sunny Hills in the championship at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs, will begin the 18-hole, shotgun-start tournament at 1 p.m. on the first tee.

Only Hacienda Heights Los Altos’ Bob May (1986-87), Santa Monica’s Mac Hunter (1945-47) and Long Beach Wilson’s Boots Porterfield (1942-44) have ever won consecutive Southern Section titles.

Woods, 16, became one of the youngest to play in a PGA Tour event when he played in the Los Angeles Open in February. Earlier this month, he won his second consecutive Orange League title. He also was the medalist at the Southern Regional team competition at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.
